A Children's Book About Patience & Trust

Why God Shines Brightest in Our Stillness

Why God Shines Brightest in Our Stillness

We live in a world that rarely stops moving. Between school runs, extracurriculars, and the constant hum of digital screens, our children are growing up in an era of “hurry.” As parents, we feel that if we aren’t keeping our kids busy, we aren’t giving them enough. But there is a profound spiritual secret we often overlook: God’s voice isn’t usually found in the noise; it’s found in the quiet.

Teaching our children to be still is about positioning their hearts to see the light of God. Here is why God shines so brightly when we finally slow down.

The Mirror of a Still Heart

Think of a lake on a windy day. The surface is choppy, and the water is murky. You can’t see your reflection, let alone what lies beneath. But when the wind stops and the water becomes still, it becomes a perfect mirror, reflecting the sun and the sky above.

Our children’s hearts are the same. When they are rushed and overstimulated, it’s hard for them to reflect God’s peace. When we help them find stillness, the “sediment” of the day settles. In that clarity, they can more easily see God’s love and presence reflecting in their own lives.

Hearing the “Gentle Whisper”

In the Bible, when Elijah looked for God, he didn’t find Him in the great wind, the earthquake, or the fire. God was in the “gentle whisper.” For a child to hear that whisper, they need to turn down the volume of the world. Stillness creates the space for children to develop their internal “spiritual ears.” It is in the quiet moments before bed, during a walk, or just sitting on the grass, that a child can realize, “Oh, God is right here with me.”

Seeing the Details

When we run through a garden, we see a blur of green. When we sit still in a garden, we see the ladybug on the leaf, the pattern of the petals, and the way the light hits the dew. Stillness allows our children to notice the “fingerprints” of God in the small things. They learn that God is present in every tiny detail of their day.

Learning the Art of Being Still

Instilling this habit in our children can feel like a challenge in such a fast-paced world. We need tools that make the concept of peace tangible and inviting for young minds.

A beautiful way to introduce this to your family is through the book “Be Still” by Jennifer Pfeiffer. Inspired by the timeless wisdom of Psalm 46:10, “Be still and know that I am God,” this book serves as a gentle guide for children and parents alike. It beautifully illustrates how we can trust God in every moment and reminds us that He is working even when we aren’t “doing.”

By reading this with your children, you are giving them more than just a story; you are giving them the permission to pause. You are teaching them that they don’t have to shout to be heard or run to be seen because in the stillness, God’s light shines most brightly, and His peace is always enough.
